Rock Army Records Releases Reviewed In The UK
UK-based music and culture magazine Mass Movement—show them some love in return at www.massmovement.co.uk and tell ‘em Rock Army Records sent you—reviewed a few of our bands in their 10th Anniversary Issue (#23), released in early 2009. Check ‘em out!
Beaux Loy – Lights Parallel CD (www.rockarmyrecords.com) ‘Lights Parallel’ may seem a bit left-field for MM, but we didn’t start this zine to be sheep, did we? Those in the mood for an infectious amalgam of slicked-up power-pop and new-wave-influenced rock need look no further, as Beaux Loy has delivered 10 tracks of sonic joy with this, his debut album. The stand-out track for me is ‘Famous,’ a delirious, keyboard-driven body-mover with the catchiest chorus I’ve heard since Michael Jackson ruled the charts 25 years ago. This record will fit nicely into collections already containing bands like The Killers, Electric Six, and New Order, and wouldn’t be a bad thing to have on hand for punk rockers looking for something to get the girls dancing at their next house party—and believe me, it’ll get ‘em dancing; I’ve seen Beaux play to packed crowds in his hometown of Austin, Texas, and the ratio of hot girls dancing to dudes like me standing there playing air-drums is a glorious site indeed. The Impaler
Carbide – Blood Branches CD (www.rockarmyrecords.com) Pantera has always been a straight-up metal band. What if they went all progressive on our asses, taking influences from bands like Meshuggah or Textures? Carbide share the Texas soil with Pantera and do know how to write weird and exciting riffs for their debut album. These guys could very well be the missing link between true American metal of the 90s and that almost jazzy music from Europe. Added to the mix are almost Hatebreed-like hardcore bits, giving it a certain body and lethality. Overall, this band does need just a bit more structure, as I am easily lost among all details. Knowing this is the first serious release by the Austin fellows, and this type of music is not the easiest to write and play, I’m giving them some fingers—thumbs (up), that is, not the ones in the middle. Martijn Welzen
Carbide – Blood Branches CD (www.rockarmyrecords.com) There’s one name though running my head. I can’t help it, and I don’t know why, but as it’s practically galloping, I’m going to have to share: Hatebreed. For some reason, these dudes remind me of Hatebreed—which isn’t a bad thing if it’s done well. And these guys, they do it very well; plenty of mosh metal mayhem that’s heavy on the beat-downs and light on pleasantries. In other words, Carbide are everything that you need for an afternoon of perfect musical madness, and it’s thanks to these buggers that I’ve fucked my knee up. That’s the last time I try to bring the mosh into my kitchen…. Tim Mass Movement
Paul Renna – Freedom CD (www.rockarmyrecords.com) ‘Freedom’ arrives out of left field with a sound that is distinctly modern, but brimming with the comfortable feel of a treasured mixtape. Renna’s powerful voice commands attention throughout, with a unique style that can be reminiscent of Paul Rodgers when he wails and Stevie Wonder when he gets lost in a groove, while maintaining its own identity. Passion—for life, for love, for the music itself—dominates every facet of the album. The lyrics provide a sense of hope even as they’re causing hearts to break, and the music—clean, Jeff Beck-inspired guitar leads and often funky rhythms accentuated by female backing vocals and colourful bursts of keyboards and horns—creates inspiration in its own fashion. ‘Freedom’ is not typical MM fare in terms of style, but it exceeds all expectations of this ‘zine in terms of substance. The Impaler
Reckless Sons – Don’t You Dare CD (www.rockarmyrecords.com) Reckless Sons are, quite simply, the truest and best American rock ‘n’ roll band on the face of the earth. ‘Don’t You Dare’ rocks like the bastard spawn of The Replacements and the New York Dolls, minus the unfocused tendencies of the former and the glam campiness of the latter. In fact, Reckless Sons frontman/songwriter Matt Butler seems to have inherited Paul Westerberg’s once-unique ability to craft a song that is equal parts bluster and bullshit yet completely honest at the same time. Musically, the band throws a few knowing winks at the young Rolling Stones—and they’re all the better for it. Much like the pre-corporate Stones and the pre-Westerberg-solo-project Replacements, Reckless Sons revel in their own honesty, flirting with danger to such a degree that it seems the whole damn thing could explode in their faces at any moment. I challenge anyone, anywhere to find a straight-up rock ‘n’ roll band that can attack a song as viciously and deliver a happy ending as satisfyingly as this band of New York City vagabonds. The future of rock ‘n’ roll has arrived. The Impaler |
